Getting Started with your Trézor®
A clear, secure step-by-step guide to set up your hardware wallet and protect your crypto — from unboxing to first transaction.
Quick start (recommended)
Follow these steps to get your Trézor up and running in about 10–15 minutes. Read each step fully before you act. Never share your recovery words with anyone.
- Unbox and verify — Confirm the tamper-evident packaging is intact. Inside you should find the Trézor device, USB cable, recovery card(s), and quick start guide.
- Connect to your computer — Use the supplied USB cable to connect your Trézor to a computer or laptop. For mobile use, follow the mobile-specific instructions in the Trézor Suite app.
- Open Trézor Suite — Download Trézor Suite (official app) from trzor.io/start and install it. Always download from the official site.
- Initialize device — In Trézor Suite, choose Create a new wallet. The device will generate a PIN and the recovery seed (24 words by default). Write the words on the included recovery card — do not store them digitally.
- Confirm backup — The device will ask you to confirm several words from the recovery phrase. This verifies your backup is recorded correctly.
- Update firmware — If prompted, install the official firmware. Only accept firmware updates inside Trézor Suite and verify the update prompts on the device screen.
- Receive test funds — Add an account in Trézor Suite (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and send a small test transaction to verify everything works.
Security reminder: Your recovery seed is the only backup of your funds. Treat it like cash — offline, safe, and private. Trézor Support will never ask for your recovery seed or PIN.

Detailed setup — step by step
1. Verify packaging and authenticity
Check that the tamper seal is unbroken. Only purchase from authorized retailers or directly from the official website. If anything looks suspicious, contact support before proceeding.
2. Power, connect, and open Trézor Suite
Connect via USB. Navigate to the official download page and install Trézor Suite. When the app opens, it will detect your device and walk you through initialization.
3. Create a PIN
Choose a PIN you will remember but that others cannot guess. The PIN protects access to the device even if someone gets physical access to it.
4. Write down your recovery seed
Write each recovery word on the provided recovery card in the correct order. Keep this card offline, in a secure place such as a safe deposit box. Consider using a metal backup to protect against fire and water damage.
5. Firmware and verification
Install official firmware as prompted. The device screen will show fingerprints of the firmware and the Suite app will show matching validation. Only proceed if the app and device indicate a valid, official firmware.
Using your Trézor
After setup, you can add accounts for supported cryptocurrencies inside Trézor Suite. Use the Receive tab to generate an address — verify the address on the device screen before sending funds.
Sending crypto
When you create a transaction, Trézor Suite will show details and the device will ask you to confirm them. Double-check the destination address and amount on the device display before approving.
Third-party integrations
Trézor works with popular wallets and services. When connecting to third-party apps, always confirm every transaction on your Trézor device (not just in the browser or app).
Lost device or recovery
If your device is lost or damaged, install Trézor Suite on a new device and choose Recover wallet. Enter your recovery seed using the device's secure input. If you suspect your seed was exposed, move funds to a brand-new wallet with a freshly generated seed as soon as possible.
FAQ & best practices
Can Trézor be hacked?
Trézor is designed to isolate private keys on the device. Social engineering and physical access are the leading risks. Never share your seed or PIN.
Where should I store my recovery seed?
Offline in a secure, fireproof location. Consider a metal plate for long-term durability. Do not take photos or store the seed on the cloud.
How often should I update firmware?
Install official firmware updates when they are released and validated by Trézor Suite. Updates often include security improvements and new coin support.
